Appoke is a work-in-progress application store that combines social networking and recommendation with app searching. It’s based around the idea that your friends are the best source of new apps – and today is announcing a deal to offer Appoke users the Been There Premium app for free.
What’s the story?
You can see our full report on Appoke here, but here’s the short version:
Appoke is a social network built around the process of finding decent application. Android developers submit to the site, where users can review, share information, and see what apps other people are using. Appoke is supposed to make searching for new apps easier for consumers, as well as get better exposure for developers.
What’s the news?
Appoke has announced an update to their service today. Along with cosmetic changes to their own Android application, including shortcuts and “load previous entries” features, is an email notification system.
And, to attract some new users, Appoke is offering a premium, paid-app for free; exclusively on their store.
What’s this premium deal?
Android developer Jordan Bonnet has created Been There. It’s an app for storing and organizing your photo’s through GPS – as long as you can get a GPS signal, you can geo-tag every photo you take through Been There, and view them on a map:

You can also create albums based around particular locations, and send those albums to your friends – the albums can be viewed in Google Earth, so it’s a cool way to let people know where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to. There’s a free version of the app, but the cooler features are exclusive to the Premium version, which costs $0.79
What we think?
Ok, so you’re not really saving a lot of money there. Been There Premium is less than a dollar. But it’s really a matter of consumer psychology that Appoke is taking advantage of: tell someone they’re getting something for free and they’re much more likely to check it out, even if it’s incredibly cheap beforehand.
I don’t know if Appoke is going to be a success – it’s too early in its development process for those kind of predictions. So far there are 240 developers submitting apps to the service, which isn’t a lot comparatively but is not a bad number all round. This is an interesting update that they’ve released. The majority of the updates were things that were requested by their early beta testers (of which they’ve got around 1700) – and coupled with the freebie on offer it makes me think that Appoke understands what attracts a loyal to a new service. I would say that this is a service worth keeping an eye on.
And, apart from anything else, I’ve warmed to them because they use a QR Code as a quick way to get to their download page!
