ChartBoost offers in-app ads for iOS games
Rating: Using the technology is basically free
A new advertising marketplace – ChartBoost – has just appeared. It aims to help iPhone game developers enjoy more success with their apps and help boost revenues, too. The marketplace can be used in a number of different ways: – internal cross-promotion; direct cross-promotion with other apps; or promoting across a wide network. The company claims that those with games that are already in the Top 100 Apple app charts, can also use ChartBoost to monetise their success by promoting other apps. ChartBoost’s proprietary technology is basically free. Continue reading
DLNA might be the iOS-killer for Android smartphones
Rating: Probably won’t be as bad as Apple’s previous refusal to to the Wintel line
It seems that Android smartphone manufacturers may well have outmanoeuvred Apple with its iOS based offerings in an almost unexpected area – the digitally connected home. The key to this success will be the Digital Living Network Alliance’s (DLNA) open media [...]
Rumour mill now has UK iPhone 5 on Octber 21st
Rating: GoMo News isn’t quite sure who to believe
According to one source – Know Your Mobile - the Apple iPhone 5 will be getting its UK launch on October 21st [2011]. The site has even given away its source – it’s a customer services representative working for O2. In our previous story about Vodafone’s accidental leak here, we’d predicted October, too. Previous rumours emanating from the USA put iPhone 5 pre-orders as starting on 30th September, and the US launch between 7th – 14th October. Continue reading
Vocre translation app wins plaudits @ TechCrunch Disrupt SF
Rating: Enough to make you want to buy an iPhone
A really neat translation app – Vocre from myLanguage – has just won a whole buncg of plaudits from the TechCrunch Disrupt event in San Francisco. It took Best Mobile app and the Audience Choice award. The catch is that Vocre is only available for the iPhone but it’s so useful it’s almost enough to make you want to buy one of Apple’s iconic handsets. Essentially what you do is speak into the iPhone; give it a shake; and voilà! it translates what you just said into another language of your choice. Currently Vocre translates from three flavours of English (US/GB/AU) into six different languages. GoMo News reckons the most useful option here has got to be into Mandarin Chinese so you can buy really low cost smartphones. Continue reading
Vodafone accidentally leaks iPhone 5 details
Rating: Any colour you like as long as it’s black or, um, white
Some eagle-eyed hack at Apple Insider here spotted a rather unfortunate mistake on a Vodafone web product page for the Vodafone Sure Signal – its femtocell offering. The page’s author was trying to be helpful and included four separate iPhone 5 models in the list of compatible handsets. These were the iPhone 5 32 GB (black or white) and the iPhone 5 16 GB (black or white). This led the news site to leap to the conclusion that there would be no 64 GB version of the iPhone 5. Even though Apple markets 64 GB versions of the iPod Touch and the iPad. What’s absolutely clear is that adding the information was a mistake because the offending page here has been amended to remove any references to an iPhone 5. Continue reading
Newsflash: Cook replaces Jobs as Apple CEO
Rating: Don’t panic. Cook didn’t previously work for Microsoft
It’s a sad day for Apple fans but its legendary CEO, Steve Jobs, has resigned and has been replaced by Tim Cook who was until yesterday the company’s COO. Jobs took the unusual action of publishing his letter of resignation here. The Apple board has followed all of his recommendations and Jobs has now been made chairman of the board. Jobs doesn’t say exactly why he has stepped down but it is well-known that he had to take time off work earlier in 2011 due to ill health. Although Apple makes no specific mention of the iPhone in Cook’s previous jobs at Apple, in previously stories such as this one, GoMo News showed that he’s on top of the situation. Still, rumours are already circulating that Samsung will benefit from this perceived set-back for Apple. We can’t see why or how. Continue reading
Re-charge your handset by pedalling
Rating: Pedal powered phone chargers found @ WOMAD
It’s easy to get carried away with mobile web surfing (especially if you’re using Wi-fi) and drain your mobile’s battery. What do you do if you’re at a music festival? You dig out your Portable Phone Charger which you won as a prize from Carling (the beer company). And, if that doesn’t work, what could you do then? Pay £3 to one of the stall holders at the festival. Or you could pedal like mad and recharge your mobile for free thanks to Electric Pedals. That’s what we did last weekend at the WOMAD festival in Wiltshire, England. Well, almost. Continue reading
Unlocking the iphone is as easy as 1-2-3
Rating: How T-Mobile has acquired one million unlockers
Discovering that T-Mobile USA has some one million iPhone users on its network even though it doesn’t officially sell Apple’s smartphones (see here) got us thinking. How did so many iPhones get unlocked. Then we received a flier from iPhone Unlockers here which indicated that its unlocking or ‘jailbreaking’ software is available in the UK for £19.99. And this software can be used anywhere in the world (including the USA, obviously) on any iPhone. GoMo News was initially sceptical about this but the site calims it can even jailbreak iPhones running the latest firmware version – 2.0. The list of ‘extra’ facilities it offers is intriguing. Continue reading
Germans can’t watch their own Grand Prix via LTE
Rating: There’s no handsets and the InfoDok doesn’t support TV
Given that Vodafone sponsors the McLaren team; that Vodafone’s network in Germany supports LTE; and that the German Grand Prix is taking place today [July 24th] at the Nurburgring – you might expect the network operator to be using the occasion to encourage Germans to buy into LTE. Our research (but we can’t be 100 per cent sure), however, shows that there aren’t any LTE handsets and Vodafone’s support site says its LTE service doesn’t currently support TV. As an unexpected by-product, GoMo News has also learnt that the iPhone is extremely unlikely to support LTE in 2011. Continue reading
Apple’s latest iPhone stats hot off the Press
Rating: GoMo News listens into analyst briefing
We’re not sure when Apple will actually release its latest figures in digital format but here are some of the numbers we could hear on Apple’s analyst call. Peter Oppenheimer, COO with Apple Computer told the listening industry observers that it has just enjoyed the highest ever quarter for iPhone and iPad sales which equated to sales of $28.6 billion. The whole of Apple’s earnings have increased thanks to dramatic growth in iPhone and iPad sales Continue reading
Why Americans ride Harleys; drink Budweiser and buy old iPhones
Rating: They want to be part of that cosy ‘family’
Here’s a really intriguing out-take from an article which aims to rationalise the irrational in the smartphone sector. Namely, why anyone would bother to pay for a handset with a blatantly inferior technical specification – like the iPhone 3G – yet be totally happy with such a choice? The article which GoMo News came across features on the International Business Times (IBT) web site here. Curiously, the article misses some of the very obvious parallels with US citizens’ other proud displays of brand loyalty in the face of overwhelming odds. We’re talking Harley Davidson, of course. Or Budweiser? Now we have the iPhone. Continue reading
Apple hikes iOS apps in UK
Rating: Anyone tied pretending to be Swiss?
It seems that Apple decided to mess around with the price levels at which it sells apps in the iTunes App Store last week [July 2011]. The UK, Mexico and Norway have seen price increases whereas Australia, Japan and Switzerland have seen minor reductions. Anyone tried pretending to be Swiss to beat the price changes? Anyway, an Apple spokeswoman appears to have told CNET here that “the ‘minor’ price adjustments are due to changes in foreign exchange rates and local tax laws in those countries.” Continue reading
Sainsbury’s site comes over all mobile friendly
Rating: Never mind the app, the browsing experience is optimised
To further entice mobile phone users to shop online, leading UK supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s has announced that it has introduced a mobile-aware version of its general merchandise (GM) shopping website www.sainsburys.co.uk. The company didn’t specify exactly whose technology it has deployed but from now onwards when you access the standard web site, it now recognises when you’re visiting using a mobile phone’s browser and consequently will display the page in a more mobile friendly manner. This means that handset owners can shop or browse through 15,000 products including those from many top brands such as Le Creuset. Continue reading
Get God live on your iPhone
Rating: Thanks to Vision IPTV and Revelation TV
It’s seems that the first success for mobile specialist, Vision IPTV, has been to land a deal with Revelation TV. This is a UK-based religious broadcaster which is extending its reach beyond traditional broadcast channels via a white-labelled video app. So now you really can get God live on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Naturally, Vision IPTV ha slots of fancy technology which ensures that the video streaming actually works and iOS users have an acceptable viewing experience. The chief benefit, though, is that TV and video content owners can now have access to a dedicated iOS app not only swifty but a reduced cost from having to develop the app themselves Continue reading
