Nokia N73 2012′s Top Stories: Nokia N73 Software Update

Rating: Hundreds of responses from the Indian sub-continent

Although the original story was posted as long ago as May 23rd 2008, the story ‘Nokia update N73 Software‘ continues to haunt us here at GoMobile News Towers. That story merely reported that in Europe, Nokia has released a newer version of the OS for the N73. The benefits of the upgrade included support for mobile TV (but only when used with the Nokia SU-33W receiver) and plus an Express Mail client. That story has now generated an astonishing 103 responses. Most of these comments are simply a plea for help but not one of the readers we have written back to via email have ever replied. So the saga continues. Continue reading

According to a report in the Daily Bhaskar here, Samsung its readying the Galaxy S4 for a February 2013 release. Now we all know what takes place in February each year – yes, the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) show. Samsung_hq Samsung to ship ‘half billion plus’ phones in 2013

That’s twenty times more than it sold in 2010

Korean electronics giant, Samsung, says it expects to sell around 510 million phones globally in 2013, cementing its position as the world’s No.1 handset manufacturer. Despite attempts by arch rival Apple to impede its progress with a barrage of patent-related lawsuits, Samsung’s star shows no sign of waning. Muhammad Azam Guest Post: Top ways to make the BlackBerry fun

by Muhammad Azam, a professional writer and gadget enthusiastic

A BlackBerry phone is all work and no fun. Or it was at least when the company launched its series of handsets quite some years back onto the market. Now that there so many apps and the games available on the market, isn’t it time that you converted your smartphone into something fun as well? Using the right BlackBerry apps and games will make it fun for you even when in the office. The device which was originally targeted as a workaholic tool is no longer the same. The Black Berry market has extended beyond just email terminals and RIM has targeted the BlackBerry towards teenagers and the people who have not started work yet. They can still make use of BlackBerry phones to connect to the world over Wi-Fi and a 3G network, of course. Continue reading

Windows Phone will fail to rule the world by 2017 says Analysys Mason

Rating: Apparently this will happen sometime in 2017

According to new research from Analysys Mason, Microsoft will ship as many Windows Phone units by 2017 as Apple will ship in 2012. This is taken from a recently published report, ‘Smartphone markets: worldwide trends, forecasts and strategies 2012–2017′. The firm reckons that Windows Phone will become the fastest-growing mobile OS in terms of number of shipments within the next five years. GoMobile News has followed the fortunes of Microsoft for many years and this conclusion is indeed very hard to swallow. Continue reading

RIM_HQ RIM shares soar 16 per cent as investors regain confidence

Shares in BlackBerry maker RIM received a rare boost on the Toronto stock exchange last night [November 22nd 2012] amid renewed optimism over its next range of smartphones. RIM shares, which have now risen in the last seven straight trading sessions, rose to their highest level since May ending the day at C$12. Nasdaq, where RIM’s shares are also traded and where volumes usually top those in Toronto, was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. Continue reading

Courtesy of WinP.cn Rumours point to Windows Phone 7.8 being imminent

Rating: Plus there’s something called Windows Phone 7.x

Well there has been a spurgle of stories about the impending release of Windows 7.8 for those with existing W7 Mango (7.5) smartphones. As we all know now such handsets will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 8, so we will just have to be content with 7.8. Or will we? One site says there is something called Windows Phone 7.x. The drawback to these stories (for us here at GoMobile Towers at least) is that the main source of the leak is a Chinese site – WinP whilst the secondary source is a German site WParea. So we can’t be 100 per cent sure what exact details have been leaked. However, both sites have anonymously received Windows Presentation slides which appear to have emanated from Nokia itself. BB10 keyboard w/ smart recognition RIM won’t wait for MWC to launch BB10

Rating: Latest version of BlackBerry OS to appear on Jan 30 ’13

It seems that Research In Motion (RIM) won’t wait for the cellular industry’s biggest global thrash – MWC 2013, to finally show the long-awaitied BlackBerry 10. It promises to reveal the first two BlackBerry 10 smartphones on the day with details of the smartphones and their availability announced at the event. In a sign that consumers aren’t the main focus for such devices, RIM has announced that the BlackBerry 10 platform has already achieved FIPS 140-2 certification. That means that government agencies will be able to deploy BlackBerry 10 smartphones and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 as soon as it becomes available. Continue reading

Regular readers might recall a recent story ‘Heins throws new light on reasons for BB 10 delays‘ in which we posed a couple of questions concerning the time it is taking RIM to introduce BB10 – its latest smartphone OS. Well, RIM’s PR people have come straight back to us with some fine answers which shed even more light on why RIM can’t rush out with a BB10 smartphone just before Xmas. Continue reading

Microsoft ‘to build own smartphone’ if Nokia and HTC don’t deliver on WP8

Microsoft is secretly planning to make its own smartphone and is already testing one design, according to those in the know at its parts suppliers.
It’s claimed the phone would effectively serve as ‘Plan B’ if key partners such as Finland’s Nokia and Taiwain’s HTC fail to shift sufficient handsets using the Seattle software giant’s new Windows Phone 8 (WP8) OS. Continue reading

BB10_screen Heins throws new light on reasons for BB 10 delays

Rating: Email has got to work when RIM finally releases

Well, at last RIM‘s CEO, Thorsten Heins, has finally thrown some light on why he is waiting until after the crucial Xmas [2012] sales period to finally release the BlackBerry 10. It’s got to work properly. Period. In true RIM fashion, the company uses the phrase ‘achieving Lab Entry’ to try to convey this message. Pure jargon, of course. But what we think the BlackBerry maker means is that some 50 mobile network operators worldwide have agreed to conduct testing with RIM to ensure its fabled push email system will actually work. BlackBerry 10 is a completely new OS – so it’s not like simply releasing up upgraded version of an existing email client. Continue reading

windows_phone_8 Microsoft fights back with Windows Phone 8

Rating: Kid’s Corner could be the dark horse here

Microsoft finally introduced the much-heralded Windows Phone 8 (WP8) yesterday [October 29th 2012] – waiting three days after the official launch of Windows 8 itself. We’re not quite sure why. After all, the new versions of Windows all boast a similar look and feel, the same technology core, plus the same built-in SkyDrive cloud service. Microsoft says Windows Phone 8 is built to work seamlessly with Windows 8 PCs, Microsoft Surface devices and the Xbox 360 console. It didn’t say which version of the Surface, though. At the Press conference in San Francisco (a place usually more associated with Apple), Microsoft showcased WP8 handsets from Nokia, Samsung and HTC. In terms of what WP8 offers, we’d say the latest version of this mobile OS seems to have three main new features: – Live Apps; Rooms; and Kid’s Corner. It also pumped up the Windows Phone Store. However, it has left existing Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) owners hanging – having previously admitted that such smartphones won’t be upgradeable to WP8. Instead, we’re being told that, “WP7.8 will be announced soon. Hang in there,” by Nokia News on Google Plus of all mediums. Another source claimed to have got a similar reply from Microsoft itself. The availability of Nokia flagship WP8 phone – the Lumia 920 is also clear as mud. Continue reading
