Guest Post: Use of apps trumps mobile web around London 2012 Games
by Jenna Berger, research manager for global digital analytics, Nielsen
We learned recently that 28 per cent of mobile users around the globe admitted to watching video on their mobile device daily, so when the Olympics came about we wanted to take a look how UK residents were engaging with their mobile phones during London 2012 events. In preparation for the events, London 2012 launched two official mobile apps and one mobile game here, all available in the iTunes App Store and the Android Marketplace. The first app, called Join In, was promoted as a planning tool and the “essential companion” as a viewer’s go-to for information on the games. Continue reading
HTC’s global sales plunge more than quarter
But phones appeal to upwardly mobile Chinese, literally
Updated figures from Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC confirm the company is still in a nosedive with 2012′s Q2 sales falling more than a quarter, with projections for Q3 indicating they could plunge even further to T$70 billion – about half of what it earned this time a year ago. In line with the fall in sales HTC’s share price has similarly plummeted, down more than two thirds in the past 12 months. Such is the alarm that the Taiwanese government, whose own exports are largely dependent on HTC’s fortunes, recently hinted it may need to prop up the struggling phone manufacturer with financial help. It parallels the concern about RIM in Canada where the Government is similarly monitoring the Ontario phone maker’s plight, though there has been no suggestion so far that it will be given a State hand. Actual Windows Phone usage jumps massively in July
Rating: Word of mouth rather than waiting for W8 Osbourne
We all know that calculating market shares from units shipments can be notoriously inaccurate as they don’t truly reflect the number of handsets actually in use. So some bright spark at mynokiablog had the clever idea of utilising stats provided by Statcounter. This company provides figures based on actual web browsing numbers which it then extrapolates into an estimate of OS market share. Statcounter provides monthly figures for the OS of all current handsets in use here. What mynokiablog did what feed in the paramenter for Finland only and came up with a comparative big jump in Windows Phone (W7 Mango) usage. Which is good news for Nokia. Continue reading

It found that most Apple iOS users are probably at risk from data leaks. Continue reading
