Good news for Android, from both Verizon and Gartner
Android fans have plenty to keep themselves satisfied with today. The boffins at Gartner have declared that Android will rise to dominate the mobile OS market along with Symbian by 2012 - and the ninjas over at BGR have nabbed an indication that Verizon could soon be launching two Android devices from Motorola.
Gartner:
Analysts from Gartner are predicting that the Android OS will be running on 14% of all smartphones globally by 2012, putting it ahead of iPhone, WinMo and Blackberry. The OS currently has around 2% of the smartphone share - but Gartner is confident that the openness of the OS will lead to a surge in the number of devices being manufactured, sold and used over the next 3 years. And we can already see that surge taking place, in the huge number of phones that are being announced and released for Android.
However, it should be noted that Gartner isn’t claimig that Android will be the number 1 OS in the world. No no, that honour will remain with the current incumbent: Symbian. Nokia’s favoured OS is currently in place on roughly 50% of all smartphones in the world, though Gartner predicts that it will see a decrease by 2012… to an only slightly less daunting 39%
Verizon:
The BGR claim is based around a device carried by Verizon employees. The device is called a Cellebrite (is that a pun on “celebrity” or “celebrate”, I wonder?), and is used at Verizon retail stores to transfer customers data from mobile to mobile. BGR got some pics from the most recent Cellebrite update, and what do you think it showed?

The Calgary was widely reported on back in April, and it has been popping up in rumours, myths and legends ever since http://www.gomonews.com/gomo-buzzwatch-aggregating-rumours-about-motorola-and-android/. It would be nice to finally get an announcement on it from Verizon - and if those pics are any indication than an announcement should shortly be forthcoming.
The Sholes is an interesting looking beast. All rumours indicate that this is to be the first Motorola Android device on Verizon - and it would appear to be a high-end, tech heavy phone for users who like to get a lot out of their devices.
