GyPSii Mobile LBS stroke Social Network Revisited

by: Bena Roberts Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I was glowing about GyPSii when it launched –but my enthusiasm slowed down slightly over the past year –because of (I felt) lack of meat or action.
So during Asia Mobile Congress I took the time to sit down with Thor S Johnson SVP Media Markets and Jeff Lin Managing Director APAC.

I started off quite arrogantly and said, spare me the spiel I have followed GyPSii from the start- just impress me. They both smiled and Jeff Lin – managed to do just that by unravelling an amazing Asia strategy.
What strategy?
Well, first of all remember that penetration in China is something like 60%. Also 3G is not yet a reality.

Then put in to perspective that GyPSii will be automatically downloaded onto many mobile devices as default and with a special GyPSii device and pack will be launched with one of the leading mobile operators.
Not only that a little pull out book on how to use GyPSii (step-by-step) will also be given away free.
I felt like I had been hit in the face with something compelling and think that GyPSii has suffered from a very competitive LBS social network market in Europe but has the early mover and first step advantage in China.

I forgave Thor for being new and I asked him if he agreed with me that GyPSii should be doing better. He smiled and said from the outside in- in might seem that way but from the inside out – every target has not only been achieved its been over-achieved. He advised me not to belittle huge manufacturer deals as these were vital and would and do drive uptake and advancement of services.  (See recent examples of press releases below).
LBS and Social Media
We then spoke at great length about social media and the impact of mobile on the Olympics in China. Again, Jeff mentioned the GyPSii Olympics service where real time blogging meant that results and videos and pictures hit GyPSii before anywhere else in the world.  We are entering a new phase in life and the immediacy of the LBS social network services will do well in a country catching up to the Western World… at an enormous speed.
In short, Jeff and Thor have catapulted GyPSii back onto my radar. Jeff’s Asian perspective impressed me. But Thor’s vision for a GyPSii advertising and mobile advertising future (not yet blogable) was overwhelmingly compelling….
More so as I had doubts about the business model in times of a recession. But once again – the standard revenue share noise was replaced with a concrete set of revenue winning examples from the guys. It made me think that revenue share is at the end of its lifespan and social media and new market dynamics are paving ways for a great range of billing opportunities.

Anyway – press release below and watch this space…. welcome back GyPSii…
