Is Dell making a mobile device? Smartphone or MID is on the books, says Michael Dell

Dell CEO, Michael Dell, has come very close to announcing that his company his producing a smartphone. During a speech in Tokyo, he said that Dell has been exploring smaller screen devices. He also said the idea Dell might produce a smartphone or MID “wouldn’t be unreasonable.”

From the speech:

“For the last three years we have integrated 3G radios into our notebooks,” said Michael Dell. “We already have agreements with many mobile carriers around netbook devices so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that we would have smaller mobile Internet devices or smartphones in the future.”

What we think?

Rumours abound that Dell is thinking of buying Palm, as a way of jumping straight into the market. While Palm is a good device, and I doubt it would hurt Dell, I doubt that’s the way they’ll go. The problem is that the market is saturated with smartphones at the moment. iPhone, Palm, Android, Samsung, the list goes on. And they’re all a bit… well, samey. Even the rumoured widescreen Moorestown device from LG and Intel looks pretty familiar. I’m sure Dell can see the same pattern, and I imagine that if they enter this market, they won’t be interested in jumping into a pool already filled with sharks.
