LocaModa gets patent for its location-based interactive media

Rating: Interactive, internet connected digital signs for media and social content

Location-based company LocaModa subscribes heavily to the belief that your mobile can and should be your remote control for the world. And this what it’s been trying to achieve with it’s particular service. In bars, venues and public spaces across America, including Times Square, LocaModa digital displays have been enabling mobile phone owners to connect to web-based social media. LocaModa can display text, media and social content from your mobile to any location it has a screen.

What does the patent cover?

The simple version is that it covers web-based social media on public digital displays. It’s actually a fairly heady patent. The abstract declares that it covers “a system and method for providing and managing location-based interactive content, including messages sent to specific location-based screens via mobile communication devices or the Internet.”

From the release:

“LocaModa has been a thought leader in extending the web to physical locations, fundamentally altering how web and location-centric applications transform and monetize location-based advertising,” said Stephen Randall, CEO of LocaModa. “We are committed to continuing the development of technologies that enable users to take control of the media around them and harness the potential of the web everywhere.”

What we think?

From a recent visit to America, I saw these kind of location-based digital screens in a huge number of bars and public spaces. I didn’t check at the time to see if they were all LocaModa, but that hardly matters now. With this patent, they might as well be. This is one of those areas that could really explode with the expanding mobile industry. You don’t really see these screens in Europe at all, but their use is growing and expanding across the US, and if other companies want to get in on that… well, they’ll have to talk to LocaModa.
