Mobile Advertising Confusion at MEM08

by: Bena Roberts Thursday, May 8th, 2008

One thing is clear ther is still a lot of confusion when it comes does to the mobile web and mobile advertising and mobile search. one thing that struck me loud and clear today was that so many people (I am sorry) really don’t understand mobile web, search or advertising.

Out of 100 people I asked:

1. Who has a transcoded site or a pure mobile site?

No one understood the question.

2. I asked how many companies used mobile advertising?

Out of over 100 people only three people put their hands up. I asked them what they used and everyone said AdMob.

3. I asked the same three companies what the results were like for mobile advertising?

The answer “poor”.

Hmmm. All of this when three big guns were on a panel.

We had David Cushman from Bauer Consumer Media

Prinz Pinakatt Manager of Interactive Marketing Europe Coca Cola

James Davis Head of Mobile Commercial Development News Group Digital (The Sun)

The jist of the panel was why mobile and how successful. Coca Cola summed it up really well. It said companies come to us with results that they are so proud of - “you got 30K click through rates with our campaign”.

Coca Cola says “that is terrible - we have billions of Coke consumers”

Ad inventory and traffic are continuing to stem the market. But more importantly, total confusion about the mobile web and mobile advertising.
