Mobile barcoding’s first big test run in UK declared a success

Rating: Airline bmi plan to introduce further barcoding in coming weeks

In May, British airline bmi launched a test of new mobile bardcoding services that would do away with the need for paper passes. A simple 2d barcode, sent on request by SMS to the customers phone, is all that’s needed to pass through check-in and security checks. The service is intended to speed up the check-in process for flying, and to reduce the amount of paper waste from airlines. Bmi have now announced that they’re happy with how the test run went, and they intend to further introduce the technology in the coming weeks.

Also, as announced at the end of October, Lufthansa Airlines has purchased a controlling interest in bmi… and seeing as Lufthansa are one of the major adopters of barcoding technology in Europe, it looks like the future for mobile barcoding in this space is pretty secure.
