Momail has launched a new Facebook service that will allow it’s users to upload pictures update their status without a net connection. The new service allows users to email cameraphone pics directly to Facebook, where it will appear on their profile page. This is done through the Momail email system, so no downloads or installations are needed. Of course, you have to be a Momail subscriber first!
The same system can be used for status updates, and for receiving updates from friends pages.
From the release:
Momail CEO Kenneth Lundin said “Now Momail users can update their Facebook profiles wherever they are and without the need to be online or to login. This functionality is yet another example of how Momail’s communication platform and optimisation technology is adding value when using the mobile for work and pleasure.”
What we think?
This is a fundamentally simple service. Sending a picture email through Momail to “Facebook” makes a picture appear on your Facebook page. Easy. This is one of many releases I’ve seen today that centres around bringing on-line and mobile web services to a phone without needing fancy software or connections. It makes me think there’s a huge underswell of support for mobile web services – it’s just that up until now they’ve been too complicated, expensive and elite for most people to bother with. I really think we’re starting to see a change there. It’s no longer just about making the newest, shiniest, fanciest app. It’s about who can make the mobile web the most accessible, the easiest to use, for the largest amount of phone owners. Momail won an award for the “most promising” company driving future technology in 2008. It seems they’re aiming to live up to that.
