Motorola mobile product will scan credit cards on a mobile device

Motorola has announced a new product for scanning credit cards. The Snap-On Mobile Payment Device will work with Motorola enterprise-class wireless handhelds, the MC-70 and the MC-75.

Snap-On Mobile Payment Device

The device looks similar to the credit card scanners you usually see in stores, except for the dock on top that allows it to clip straight into the phone. It has a slot for swiping and reading credit cards for payments, which can be confirmed on the spot over secure wireless LANs and WANs.

What we think?

The MC-70 and MC-75 are closer to handheld computers than they are to mobile phones. As “rugged” devices for a mobile workforce, the Snap-On really makes a perfect compliment to them. Delivery agents and salespeople in the field will love this. But the Snap-On is over 13 oz, and costs over 600 dollars. It’s size and it’s expense show a product that was definitely not designed for use outside of retail.
