SD Cards deliver DRM movies, music and data to mobile phones
UK company Calton Hill have announced that they have developed mobile phone and memory card software that will allow the end user to watch a movie or listen to music stored on an SD card whilst allowing the copyright holder full DRM protection.
Calton Hill’s SecureSharing solution is the first commercial usage of GlobalPlatform device technology in mobile handsets, and also the first commercial DRM solution based on GPD/STIP. SecureSharing stores encrypted sensitive content on a SanDisk TrustedFlash™ card, which can only be read by secure GlobalPlatform compliant mobile devices. The GPD/STIP Specification provides a totally secure execution environment on the mobile device, allowing the content to be loaded from the card and played on the device without any threat from hackers or illegal copying. The solution also, for the first time in DRM software, allows the consumer to legally lend or gift the SD card with their copy of the film to someone else.
How does it work?
The content lies in an encrypted form on the SD card, unable to be played until decrypted by a set of digital keys, which lie in a secure area on the card and which can only be read by the DRM client developed by Calton Hill. Once the card is inserted into the mobile device the software is loaded onto the phone along with a UI. The licences remain secure on the card at all time as does the content. Once the SD card is removed the DRM software is removed from the phone and the content can longer be played on that device. This the licence is tied to the card and not the device.
Steve Rooney, CEO of Calton Hill, comments: “SecureSharing is a unique mobile DRM solution which addresses the needs of content developers to secure their content against hackers and piracy, yet which also satisfies consumers by allowing them to view content wherever and whenever they want.
