BlackBerry opens up BBM to Android & iOS

No mention of WP8 version, though

In a typical if-you-cant-beat-em-join-em approach, BlackBerry has just announced plans to make its IMS facility BlackBerry Messenger BBM available to iOS and Android users. That is, of course, if Apple and Google allow BlackBerry to upload the apps to their resxpecitive app stores. There’s no mention of a Windows Phone 8 (WP8) client, of course. One UK publication described BBM as the “rioters’ texting toool” because BBM proved to be the IMS of choice amongst London rioters. Other observers take the view that WhatsApp is likely to have the most to lose. However, GoMo News believes that it’s the mobile operators who are most in danger as a universal BBM could seriously dent their SMS revenues. Continue reading

Get ready to switch to RIM’s BB10

Rating: GoMo’s Top Tips for migrating from an old Berry to the latest models

With RIM all set to launch the very latest version of its mobile OS – BlackBerry 10, tomorrow [January 30th 2013], it has drawn our attention to the process of migrating from one BlackBerry model to another. The need for backups is therefore a must. GoMobile News thought it might be useful to provide some Top Tips for doing so from our recent experience of migrating from an 8250 to a 9320. We don’t know how much easier it might be to migrate to a BB10 device yet but there’s no harm in being safe rather than sorry. Continue reading

Revolutionary messaging app, ZMS, confuses GoMo

Rating: it’s nothing to do with SMS

When the authors of the ZMS app for Android and iOS , inZair, described the product as, “Set to revolutionise smartphone messaging,” – they managed to confuse us here at GoMobile Towers. We thought the product (because of the name) was revolutionising the text/SMS market. The blurb talked about ZMS users specifying the time and/or the location that recipients receive their text, picture, video or voice messages. Initially, we thought that would enable us to trigger an SMS when we reached a particular venue, for example. Sadly, this ability only applies to those with the app loaded and the app creates a ‘ZMS’ rather than an SMS or MMS. Continue reading

Guest Post: The power of messaging

Why it so important in today’s hyper-connected world

by Arnold Rijpma, vp for business development with Acision

This Summer [2012], over 400,000 people descended upon London to witness sporting history being made before their very eyes. Currently, with the Premier League and the Rugby Union in full swing, we can see that during truly global events, fans at home and abroad use their mobile devices to send text and picture messages of the action as it happens. Or they browse the internet to get the latest news and follow results. Although Facebook and Twitter are great ways of sharing instant snaps and statements publicly, SMS and MMS are widely used (and in demand) to share private thoughts and pictures between family and friends around the world. Whatsapp users suffer again from ‘pay-for-messages’ spoof

Rating: Jim Balsamic spoof migrates from BBM users

An unfortunate co-incidence appears to have affected some users of the popular IM (Instant Messaging) service – Whatsapp. At the same time as the service appeared to be experiencing slight problems with status messages, some clown sent out a spoof message (which we have reproduced below). Now the clue for us was the fact that the spoof included a message from one “Jim Balsamic” claiming to be CEO of Whatsapp. Here at GoMobile News we immediately spotted the name as a deliberate fake. The real CEO is Whatsapp co-founder, Jan Koum. Anyway, it seems that our spoofer(s) spotted an opportunity yesterday [November 29th 2012] when some users who went to their contacts book saw a system message saying ‘status unavailable’ or ‘ Status : error’. Heins throws new light on reasons for BB 10 delays

Rating: Email has got to work when RIM finally releases

Well, at last RIM‘s CEO, Thorsten Heins, has finally thrown some light on why he is waiting until after the crucial Xmas [2012] sales period to finally release the BlackBerry 10. It’s got to work properly. Period. In true RIM fashion, the company uses the phrase ‘achieving Lab Entry’ to try to convey this message. Pure jargon, of course. But what we think the BlackBerry maker means is that some 50 mobile network operators worldwide have agreed to conduct testing with RIM to ensure its fabled push email system will actually work. BlackBerry 10 is a completely new OS – so it’s not like simply releasing up upgraded version of an existing email client. Continue reading

Industry reacts positively to Apple’s iPad 3 launch

Rating: Rumours of iPad mini prove false, though

It wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret. However, the industry’s reaction to Apple’s launch of the iPad 3 yesterday [March 7th 2012] has been pretty positive. According to Mike Anderson, CEO with Chelsea Apps Factory, “The new device is also certainly going to be a shot in the arm for the apps business.” Mark Watson, an evp for technology and engineering with Antenna, observed, “The apps that Apple demonstrated as part of their announcement as well as the improved integration of services like iCloud suggest that this device is going to reinforce Apple’s position as first-choice tablet and market leader.” Significantly, Apple still needs to do more Fred Huet, md with Greenwich Consulting, thinks. “While the iCloud is a good offering, further functionality is needed in order to up Apple’s game against the likes of Google and Amazon,” he argued. Lynnette Prigmore, head of product with Proporta, also praised the hardware. “We’re particularly excited to see the much awaited 4G LTE feature with a 9 hour battery life,” she claimed. RIM debuts BlackBerry OS 7.1 at CES

Rating: New BlackBerry Maps app supports coupons

BlackBerry maker, Research In Motion (RIM), took advantage of CES 2012, Las Vegas to showcase the latest version of its OS – 7.1. The biggest surprise will come for owners of Curve 9360 or 9380 models which will suddenly boast an FM radio. The radio circuitry was always there – but RIM hadn’t got around to implementing it. Unlike internet radio, FM radio doesn’t burn up your data allowance. 7.1 will also leverage the NFC capabilities of models which support it via the new BlackBerry Tag. The new OS also catches up with Android in allowing owners to turn their handsets into mobile hot spots – enabling device to take advantage of a 3G connexion via Wi-fi. An interesting development is the inclusion of coupons in the new BlackBerry Maps app. BBM has been improved, too. Continue reading

Will services like BBM be the death of SMS?

Rating: Apparently not because there’s something called RCS-e

There’s been a great deal of doom and gloom cast over the fast growth of instant messging (IM) services such as BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Apple’s iMessage, MXit, WhatsApp, Facebook Chat and Skype. Some are predicting that these so-called OTT (Over The Top) messaging services will spell the end for SMS/text. One figure banded about is the fact that last month [October 2011], it was revealed that over one billion messages are now being sent in a single day via the popular WhatsApp app. These developments have to be put in context and one such commentator is Tom Veldman, director of product marketing with Acision. He argues that the imminent demise of SMS at the hands of OTT service is an over-exaggeration. Continue reading

RIM probably overprices BBM Music in UK

Rating: But the number of BBM users globally soars

Well, RIM has decided to press ahead with a full launch of its BBM Music service. We previewed the beta version of this offering here. The bad news is that BBM Music will cost £4.99 per month which is a straight pound sterling to dollar swap whereas GoMo News had hoped the Canadian manufacturer of the BlackBerry would have done a currency conversion and charged around £3. The good but limited news is that you can download the app for free right now and not only is the app free but you also get a free two month trial. If you do it now you will get free music until January 15th 2011. RIM also decided to release figures on its customerbase which are impressive – especially given the infamous three day outage. Continue reading

Face for BBM isn’t quite what you’d expect

Rating: It’s still a really neat BlackBerry app, though

When we first discovered Facebook Chat for BBM from msonar, GoMo News thought it had struck gold. What we thought it did was use BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) as the bearer to reach those available to chat on Facebook. Which would have made those messages were free, of course. Sadly, it doesn’t. But it is highly efficient. Facebook Chat for BBM is also one of the few applications to use the new XMPP protocol for Facebook Chat – which offers faster communications and smaller data requirements. The other good news is that this app is free. Continue reading

RIM launches BBM music in 3 countries

Rating: They all speak English and charge in dollars

Good old RIM is up to its usual tricks. This time with a service called BBM Music. We covered what this service offers in a previous story ‘RIM adds music and social to the mix with BBM Music’ here.
So the leading smartphone supplier has decided to go live with this service today [November 2nd 2011]? The crazy thing is that it is only available immediately in three countries: – the USA, Canada and Australia. About the only thing they seem to have in common (apart from English as a shared language) is the fact that their currency is in dollars. Why other English speaking countries like the UK have to wait is anybody’s guess. Continue reading

RIM rolls over like fat dog on ice facing UK MPs

Rating: BBM’s usefulness is not RIM’s fault

Displaying its long-standing inability to manage the brand image, Blackberry manufacturer, RIM, appears to have rolled over like a fat dog on ice and accepted responsibility for something which isn’t its fault. According to recdent news reports, when facing British politicians investigating the London August riots, RIM executive, Stephen Bates, volunteered that his company would disable its popular instant messaging (IM) service, BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) if the U.K. government asked it to. Why? It’s abit like the makers of the Louisville Slugger, Hillerich &amp Bradsby, promising to restrict sales of its product in the UK just because that particular baseball bat is the weapon of choice amongst rioters. Insanity! Continue reading

UK BlackBerry user woes

Rating: Can you please switch on BIS/BBM please?

Considering GoMo News has encountered this problem so frequently, we decided to share our woes with you. It happens when existing prepaid or contract users decide to switch over to a BlackBerry handset from another make/model. The main purpose of migrating to a RIM BlackBerry is to take advantage of the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service. As a consumer, you’ll want to make the connexion via the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) rather than the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). Just try phoning your network operator’s technical support call centre and explaining that is what you want to do. We reckon the agents are working from the same support knowledge base as the one available to the general public. And there’s no obvious answer buried in the solutions. Continue reading
