Amazon apparently patents the handset airbag
Rating: We think a dinghy variant could prevent loo water damage
In another illustration of the way the US Patents system works, Jeff Bezos – a muti-millionaire as a result of founding Amazon, has supposedly filed a truly daft patent. It is an air bag that will trigger as you drop your handset to prevent it from damaging the device – particularly the screen. The patent is clearly aimed at iPhone users. At around £50 a pop to replace a cracked screen, it’s widely estimated that Apple fanboys have wasted millions keeping their smartphones alive. GoMobile News cannot see the point of this invention since – amongst other things, the air bag would be redundant if Apple simply had used Gorilla glass on its smartphones like Nokia does. Mobile advertising blamed for Facebook shares woe
Rating: Giant can’t work out a way to make mobile pay
It seems a “rapid shift” away from users accessing Facebook from desktop computers over to access from the mobile web and from mobile apps is being touted as the chief factor behind the decline of Facebook’s share value. So much so that there’s already been a class action launched in the USA. US-based law firm Robbins Geller has filed the action in a court in Manhattan. According to the UK’s Daily Mail here … The lawsuit states, “The true facts at the time of the IPO were that Facebook was then experiencing a severe and pronounced reduction in revenue growth due to an increase of users of its Facebook app or website through mobile devices rather than a traditional PC such that the company told the underwriter defendants to materially lower their revenue forecasts for 2012.” Continue reading
British PM provides great endorsement for iPad
Rating: UK civil servants create £20,000 custom app for him
You’re probably never going to see it appear on the Apple iTunes App Store but the British tax payer has just forked out £20,000 for the development of an iOS app for the Prime Minister’s own personal iPad. Apparently developed by the Cabinet Office, it will provide David Cameron with a ‘management dashboard’ that will pull in the latest information from across various government agencies. So it will provide the PM with instant access to crime statistics; unemployment figures; NHS waiting lists; and the latest polling data. It will be pretty socially aware too, being able to pull in stuff from Google and Twitter (no mention of Facebook, though). There’s even rumours that modified versions may be made available to other users within the British Government. Continue reading
RIM mismanages BlackBerry’s image over UK riots
Rating: Angers Middle Britain and human rights group
Rather than tarnishing its image, the UK riots could easily have improved the standing of RIM’s BlackBerry amongst the leading smartphones. The fact that its handsets are both ideal for communicating and secure are features – not failings. The truth is that its smartphones were so secure, that [...]
Maze cheats replace pub cheats at Longleat
Rating: Funny how they all have iPhones and BlackBerries
Besides voice communication, one of the commonest uses for mobile phones in the UK has always been for cheating in pub quizzes. Now, it’s been revealed that GPS-enabled handsets are being utilised to help visitors get themselves out of a particularly complex hedge maze situated in the Longleat, England theme park. Spoil-sports simply turn on the satnav capability built into their phones and utilise a service such as Google Earth to extract themselves from the maze when bored of escaping via conventional means. Strangely, cheats are widely reported as using iPhones and BlackBerries but not Nokias. Are Nokia owners more honest, then? Continue reading
iPhone apps, Teletext Mobile and the future of newspapers
Teletext Mobile is right in the centre of the growing middle ground between traditional news media and mobile technology. As print newspapers become increasingly threatened by digital media, many observers have begun to see mobile as the natural escape route for papers – a way of delivering news articles to people on the go. The Daily Mail Group & Trust (DMGT) is a vast media group in England that owns hundreds of national and regional newspapers, and other media properties. Teletext Mobile is part of that group, and since the start of 2010 has been the provider of mobile services to the entire group. We spoke to MD Neil Johnson about the present and future of Teletext Mobile. Continue reading
Daily Mail draws mobile marketer Velti into the fold
Today’s a big day for mobile marketing company Velti. The Daily Mail & General Trust (DMGT) is a truly colossal company – it started as just the Daily Mail newspaper, but has expanded to absorb large media companies, financial institutions and more. The section of DMGT that handles all if its media properties (of which there are a lot) is called A&N Media. And today, Velti has announced that A&N has signed it to handle the mobile customer relationship management (CRM) services of some of its largest properties. Continue reading
