O2 revenues continue to spiral down

Britain’s second biggest mobile carrier O2 witnessed an 8.5 per cent drop in revenues in Q4 2012, despite signing up 282,000 new customers over the period – more than either of its main two rivals.
It’s the second successive drop for the carrier, owned by Spain’s Telefonica, which blamed the Q3 drop on customers delaying renewal of contracts ahead of Apple’s iPhone 5 launch. Continue reading

Britain’s largest mobile network EE is being primed for flotation at the end of this year in what could prove to be London’s biggest stock market listing in over two years.
If the IPO succeeds it would raise billions for owners Deutsche Telekom and France Telekom, both of whom are in need of a cash injection to invest in expanding their home networks, acquire new spectrum and pay off debts. Continue reading

Seven carrier alliance upsets the M2M applecart

Rating: Industry reaction to the Jasper Wireless realted announcement

Whoa! There has been massive industry reaction to the seven mobile network operator alliance for M2M which we wrote about previously here. Not al of it has been positive with Frost & Sullivan questioning whether another partnership will defragment the M2M ecosystem. The one common factor which these seven carriers share is that they are all customers of Jasper Wireless. However, there are multiple suppliers for such solutions including Ericsson. Plus this is not the only alliance over M2M in existence. Significantly, this announcement has also draw attention to the fact that M2M is on the verge of exploding as a potential revenue source for mobile network operators. Continue reading

Mozilla introduces a brand new mobile OS – Firefox

Rating: Yet another mobile OS enters the market

Just when you thought the mobile OS sector was fragmented enough – with the likes of BlackBerry, bada and Windows Phone 7 (W7 Mango) already struggling, here comes another completely new mobile OS. Enter Firefox mobile OS brought to you by popular browser supplier, Mozilla. Unfortunately for native mobile app developers, this one stands a very good chance of succeeding. The reasons? Well, firstly this OS is based around HTML5 technology and unless GoMobile News is hallucinating, that means all existing mobile apps written using HTML5 will run on it. Secondly, Firefox OS has a whole bunch of Tier One mobile network operators behind it. Thirdly, two prominent Chinese handset manufacturers – ZTE and TCL, have already committed to it. Finally, this OS is attacking a very clearly defined niche – namely entry-level (read low cost) handsets built for emerging markets. Continue reading

The potential merger of AT&T and T-Mobile in the US could be a truly huge deal. Somewhat like the creation of Everything Everywhere in the UK, a joint-venture between T-Mobile UK and Orange, there are fears it could result in an operator so large (80% of the wireless market) it would stifle competition. Dangerous SMS exploits revealed

Rating: Germans show how Android OS is vulnerable

Dangerous stuff this. It seems that two German researchers – Collin Mulliner and Nico Golde – have decided to go public with the news that the majority of mobile phones – and featurephones in particular -are vulnerable to attacks via SMS. This news was revealed in a talk to the infamous Chaos Computer Club Congress in Berlin. It included the mention of the so-called ‘SMS of Death’. The pair work at the Technical University in Berlin. However, Mulliner has links to Charlie Miller of Security Evaluators and Charlie is acknowledged as proving there are exploits in the Android OS which leave handsets vulnerable. Continue reading
