Apple still rakes in lion’s share of app revenues, but Google is closing gap fast

Search giant’s app income jumps 90 per cent in just one quarter

App revenues at Google Play are growing much faster than those at rival Apple’s iTunes, though it’s the latter that still accounts for three quarters of all purchases. Collectively the app stores brought in $2.2 billion in the first three months of this year, according to Canalys, with Apple’s App Store generating $1.48 billion of that. But Google is catching up fast. Separate data from another research firm, App Annie, show the search giant has made significant headway from a year ago when its apps generated just a tenth of Apple’s revenues. In fact, Google’s revenues jumped 90 per cent in Q1 2013 from the fourth quarter last year. Continue reading

GoMo accidentally downloads ‘exclusive’ music app to HP TouchPad

Rating: Samsung had supposedly struck exclusive content deal

An exclusive deal has supposedly been struck between leading Android handset manufacturer, Samsung and mobile music specialist MusicQubed. The first handset to come with the Official Top 40 singles chart app preloaded will be Galaxy Ace II. However, this app is also available from Google Play here. When we tried to download it to a non-Galaxy phone the server said it was incompatible with all of our devices except the Cm_tenderloin. We clicked on that and suddenly realised the app had been sent to our HP TouchPad tablet running the Cyanogenmod version of Android. And, yup, it works, folks. Continue reading

GoMo discovers neat F1 Timing app on official site

Rating: A great way to keep track of your favourite Formula One driver

Here at GoMobile Towers we’re pretty much a bunch of petrolheads and the Formula One Grand Prix is our special favourite. The snag is that currently here in Blighty (the UK), certain races are only shown live on pay-per-view TV. In our case, BSkyB’s Sky F1 channel. Now the normal way for any Brit to deal with such a situation is to go down the pub (bar) and watch F1 on the big screen. The trouble is that the UK is a nation of footie and rugby fans and there’s a Spain versus Italy soccer match right in the middle of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. Trying to sort out this mess, GoMobile News happened to visit Formula One’s mobile friendly web site – http://mobile.formula1.com/ where we noticed the official F1 2012 Timing app. We just had to download it. Adding Google apps to Android on the H-P TouchPad

Rating: You end up with access to Google Play

Regular readers may recall that GoMobile News finally bit the bullet and installed a version of Android (4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich) on our HP TouchPad tablet here. Given H-P’s current woes, Android is obviously the future for H-P tablets. Anyway, for copyright reasons, GoMobile News didn’t install the full set of Google apps because legally it isn’t permitted. See our previous story here. Continue reading

Spanish speakers hit by fake Android banking apps

Rating: Just exactly is this malware escaping into the wild?

It seems a number of players in the mobile security sector are getting hot under the collar thanks to the discovery of ‘fake’ mobile banking Android apps. At present, it seems to GoMobile News that these attacks are targeting Spanish speakers – particularly as the banks in question are Banesto, BBVA and Santander. What’s really worrying the security experts is that they are not quite sure how these Android malware apps are escaping into the wild. However, at least one security software provider, ESET, is confident that its Android security app will pick up these nasty example of malware ‘heuristically’ as a variant of the Android Trojan – SMS Stealer C. The issue has been highlighted by The Hacker News here which in turn spotted mention of the outbreak on McAfee blog post here. Continue reading
