Tizen mobile OS 101: Understanding Tizen’s origins

Rating: Yet another mobile OS – this one backed by Samsung and intel

Whilst Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS continue to dominate the mobile OS scene, there are still a number of alternatives vying for attention in the mobile sector. One of these is Tizen which – like Google’s Chrome and H-P’s webOS all use Webkit and a Linux kernel. By contrast, Mozilla’s Firefox (see here) has its own runtime environment in terms of Geko not Webkit. Where has Tizen sprung from? Well it’s really a joint effort by Intel and Samsung which spearhead the Technical Steering Group (TSG) which leads the Tizen Project. To give Tizen a bit of marketing clout there is also a Tizen Association which can be found here. Continue reading

Adding Google apps to Android on the H-P TouchPad

Rating: You end up with access to Google Play

Regular readers may recall that GoMobile News finally bit the bullet and installed a version of Android (4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich) on our HP TouchPad tablet here. Given H-P’s current woes, Android is obviously the future for H-P tablets. Anyway, for copyright reasons, GoMobile News didn’t install the full set of Google apps because legally it isn’t permitted. See our previous story here. Continue reading

HP blames smartphones and tablets for job cuts

Rating: Doing a Nokia and ignoring Android at its peril

It appears that Hewlett-Packard (H-P) is blaming its current misfortune on the rise of smartphones and tablets – such as the iPad. These have impacted sales of laptops for the world’s largest vendor of computers. GoMobile News isn’t surprise given the mess which current CEO, Meg Whitman (former CEO of eBay) inherited from her predecessor, Leo Apotheker. What is it with global market leaders? H-P appears to be ‘doing-a-Nokia’ and ignoring the Android OS. Which is bizarre given that even GoMobile News has been able to port Android onto its H-P TouchPad tablet. Continue reading

H-P has triggered a tablet price melt-down with the TouchPad

Rating: Could adversely affect the Pre 3 smartphone’s sale price

It might not have been intentional, but HP’s fire sale of its TouchPad tablet (see here) appears to have triggered a general melt-down in the prices achievable for tablet computers. There are numerous reports of deep rice cuts to rival products. Prime candidates here are Motorola’s Xoom Android Tablet and the HTC Flyer. The Flyer is reputedly now available from the Carphone Warehouse for £150 off the standard price, taking it down to £329. There could also be an unexpected spin-off from the forthcoming allegations that the pricing for e-books is subject to a conspiracy. Authorities might investigate why tablets are almost twice the price of netbooks when they don’t offer twice the functionality? Worse still for HP, having perpetuated savage price cuts on its webOS based tablet, how can it realistically expect the market to pay full price for its newly released Pre 3 smartphone which also runs the seemingly doomed webOS? Update: Bottom falls out of HP TouchPad pricing

Rating: Has HP knocked £230 off the price?

Obviously HP wants to wash its hands of webOS as fast as possible because the company has kick started a fire sale of its TouchPad tablet in Canada. The Canadian store, Future Shop, had knocked C$300 off the price of the 16GB version – reducing the cost down to a mere C$99. When GoMo News checked here, the company had already run out of the bargain of the year. The obvious conclusion is that HP will replicate its tactics in the USA and the UK. We looked at the TouchPad page on Staples UK here and the company was still selling it for £291.35. We calculate that if Staples offered the same discount in the UK, that would price the tablet at £61. So that’s £230 off and the company was already claiming it had taken £41 off the price anyway. As an easy way to get your handset on webOs 3, nothing could beat that. Continue reading

Another one bites the dust – bye, bye webOS says HP

Rating: Smartphone OS world loses another major player

Hot on the heels of Nokia spending extraordinary amounts on the Symbian OS and then suddenly dumping it for WP7, HP has dramatically decided to pull the plug on webOS – the mobile OS it bought from Palm. HP acquired the Palm OS for $1.2 billion only 16 months ago (April 2010), and since then it has spent an unknown amount of money on launching the Touchpad webOS tablet and the Palm Pre 3. The decision appears particularly puzzling since the first webOS 3 handset – the Pre 3 – was only just made available online yesterday (see our previous story here), the same day the company decided to pull the plug. HP’s Pre 3 is available in UK for £299

Rating: Strangely US fans will have to wait a little longer

Thanks to Pre Central here, we now know how webOS fans can get hold of an HP Pre 3 (see our previous story here). One way is to visit the Palm Eurostore here. There you can purchase an 8GB version for £299 (presumably inc VAT). The news site also managed to discover two other online sites which seem to have stocks of the Pre 3. One is box.co.uk here which wants £299.98 (inc VAT) and the other is Clove Technology here which wants £322.80 (inc VAT). Incidentally these handsets are SIM-free and could be used on any (GSM) network. Continue reading

Some handsets still missing from UK shelves

Rating: HP’s Pre 3 and Huawei’s Blaze for starters

The gaps between product announcements and actual shipping dates are becoming very frustrating for mobile phone enthusiasts in the UK. Currently, there is a great deal of buzz surrounding HP‘s Pre 3 handset because it uses the latest version (3) of Palm’s old OS – namely webOS. However, if you try to buy a Pre 3 on the Orange network, for example, you can’t do so at present. You’ll have to try one of the online handset sales stores. Much the same applies to the new Android handset from Huawei – the Blaze. Lots of stores list it but none seem to have a price or availability. Unless you’re in India where the Blaze seems to have a price tag of around 12,000 rupees (about £160). Huawei seems to be copying its arch rival, ZTE, and is hoping to start selling handsets in the UK under its own brand. The Chinese manufacturer certainly seems to have picked the right person to set the operation up – Mark Mitchinson. Continue reading

webOS publication, Pivot, launched to aid app developers

Rating: Read all about it
Described as a revolution in app discovery and promotion, HP is launching a new monthly publication called Pivot. It is intended to be complementary to the HP webOS App Catalog and a means of enabling readers to learn about new ways of use apps on their webOS devices in everyday life. “Pivot is designed to broaden developer exposure and create a dynamic marketplace for the burgeoning webOS developer community,” HP says. Richard Kerris, vp for webOS worldwide developer relations with HP, commented,”Pivot brings app discovery to a new level for customers and developers alike.” Pivot is intended to co-incide with the commercial availability of the HP TouchPad.
