GoMo bricks its own Nokia Lumia 800 Mango phone

Rating: Handset won’t reboot after update

We’re not quite sure exactly how we managed this, but GoMobile News has accidentally managed to ‘brick’ our Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) handset. ['Bricking' is the technical jargon for ruining the handsets firmware so that it won't function. In other words, the device is about as useful as a brick.] The Lumia 800 just won’t reboot and gets stuck at the point where the word ‘Nokia’ is displayed on the screen. The trouble started after we had performed an update which took the handset to the very latest version of WP7 for the Lumia – Update 7.10.8773.98. It worked for a while until the handset ran out of juice. When we tried to recharge the handset it just got stuck. Continue reading

Latest Windows Phone W7 Mango update confuses

Rating: What are the really most important extra features, then?

GoMobile News has only just stumbled upon the very latest updates to the Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) mobile OS for the Nokia Lumia range of smartphones. It’s curious. What we would regard as massive benefits have been played down whereas tiny breakthroughs get major billings. Here’s a good example. If you flip the handset’s face down then it will automatically end an incoming call. Um ,great stuff. This glosses over the fact that finally, after a lot of pressure from users and GoMobile News itself, Microsoft has finally provided Nokia with the ability to turn the handset into a local Wi-Fi hotspot so that other devices can share your 3G connexion. Continue reading

Apple losing its crown to Samsung in smartphone stakes

Rating: Data from uSwitch simply confirming obvious trend

Without Steve Jobs, it was inevitable that Apple would lose some of its shine. The investable outcome has been that attention has focussed on Samsung’s Samsung Galaxy S III instead. The latest Mobile Tracker data from uSwitch.com (in the UK) simply confirms this. Samsung’s flagship handset is continuing its reign at the head of the company’s mobile handset chart. Although these figures shouldn’t be taken as Gospel [100 per cent accurate], they do show some very interesting trends. In particular that Nokia’s Windows Phone (W7 Mango), the Lumia 800, has re-entered the chart at number eight. That puts it above the two ageing iPhone (4 and 3GS ) models. The aura of invincibility which Apple has previously enjoyed in the mobile/cellular market has now been pricked. Continue reading

Bet2Go revises its mobile offering to support WP7

Rating:

Just in time for the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 8th 2012, Bet2Go has launched an all-new version of its app for smartphones. Not only has the UI been improved but the company claims it is quicker to bet with this new release. The most impressive part about this announcement is that Bet2Go has trawled its support database and discovered that this latest release covers a previous problem GoMobile News encountered with this app. Namely that it wouldn’t work on a Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) handset (the Nokia Lumia 800). We can confirm that the ‘other smartphones’ version of the app is compatible with W7 Mango. Continue reading

Windows Phone 8 to hit stores in the Autumn

Rating: Appears to be favouring WP8 over WP7 (Mango)

Matt Rawlings writes, at Microsoft’s recent summit, fans of the Windows Phone handsets were expecting to hear news about the specifications and release date for the new Windows Phone 8 – the handset that is expected to rival the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 for the bestseller of 2012 tag. The customers who have stayed loyal to Microsoft over the years, opting to remain with the Windows Phone rather than moving to Apple, Samsung and the other competitors, were hoping for a grand announcement, giving all the details which they need to further enhance their view that the Windows Phone is the best option. However, there was no fanfare announcement, no glitter and streamers nor marching bands. Instead, there were a few sneak previews and a rough guestimate as to the release date. Continue reading

Nokia Lumia 800 W7 Mango Updates disappoint

Rating: No Wi-fi tethering and Bluetooth auto-answer yet
In Europe, Nokia has been proudly boasting that has released the third software update for the Lumia 800 W7 Mango phone in only four months. There are plenty of disappointments, however. One of them will almost certainly focus around the fact that while Wi-fi tethering has been promised [...]

BlackBerry F1 app from Divum is good for free

Rating: Could be improved quite easily

Over the weekend GoMobile News got to play with an updated app for Formula One (F1) motor racing addicts on the RIM BlackBerry. The latest version of F1 Live! for BlackBerry is 3.0.1 and it comes from India’s Divum Corporate Services. The app actually proved to be quite handy so you may want to download it to your ‘Berry before the next F1 race in China on 15th April [2012]. Mobilethink provides OTA solution for W7 Mango configuration

Rating: No more waiting to update operator settings

A solution which will enable mobile network operators to send configuration settings over-the-air (OTA) to W7 Mango devices has just been released by device management specialist Mobilethink. The company claims it’s the first time all WP7 users will be able to access the mobile Internet irrespective of their network operator. Mobilethink actually alleges that in worst case scenarios, users have had to wait for weeks for their devices to be re-configured. That’s because in certain circumstances the user was prevented from correcting network settings after their devices had been shipped thanks to Microsoft security policies. Continue reading

The one thing missing from WP7 Mango is Profiles

Rating: Opportunity for developer to fill the (g)app

The Lumia 710 (W7 Mango) handset from Nokia which Vodafone lent us was so impressive that we decided to go for fhe slicker Lumia 800 model when it came to contract renewal time. What is the feature which we really, really miss most? You won’t believe it but the thing which is most sorely missed is the good old ‘Profiles’ option. Which is surprising really since it was one of the default facilities that distinguished the Nokia user experience from rival manufacturers. GoMobile News has searched high and low for a solution and come to the conclusion that pursuading a developer to fill the gap with an app is the only way forward. What happens, though, if this oversight is fixed in the next WP 7 release which we believe is nicknamed Apollo? Continue reading

RadiumOne, the firm behind the PingMe Messenger app, has revealed that it hopes to unveil a version PingMe for Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) next week [April 2012]. Following an overhaul of its existing BlackBerry application, the company claims that in just six months, PingMe has [...]

Apps can be fine tuned for W7 Mango entry phones

Rating: Also tethering for 800 & 710 coming soon

Here at GoMobile Towers, we’re looking forward to arrival of Nokia’s entry level W7 Mango handset, the Lumia 610 (see our previous story here). It should be shipping in Q2 2012 and in the UK, Clove Technology is already taking orders for it here @ £190 (ex VAT). The only snag is that that the 610 has less memory available to it than the other models in the Lumia range with a mere 256MB. So GoMobile News is afraid that Mango apps will run slowly on it. Not if developers write them properly. There’s an excellent article on the Windows phone Developer Blog here written by Mike Battista who reveals the existence of a 256MB emulator. Did you also know that the 610 will also be featuring ‘tethering’? Continue reading

World’s simplest use of QR codes discovered

Rating: My Contact Info Free app from Yuv Apps

If Carlsberg made the world’s simplest W7 Mango app to employ QR [2D] barcode technology then it would have invented My Content Info Free. But it doesn’t – Yuv Apps does. It’s a very basic app that turns your contact info into a QR code which you can display on your Windows Phone 7.5′s (Mango) screen. The Free version is exactly what it says – it costs nothing so you can only enter a limited amount of information. For example, it only lets you store one telephone number. If you like the idea then you can simply pay $0.99 for the full version and store more telephone numbers. Continue reading

Nokia’s Q4 results aren’t all bad news

Rating: At least it has sold over 1 million Lumias

Fans of W7 Mango can take some heart from the latest figures issued by Nokia. It announced that to date the company has managed to sell over one million Lumias. That’s not bad going if you look at the small amount of markets that these devices are being sold in. The Lumia 710 still hasn’t gone on sale in the UK yet, but it is on sale in the United States where it is being offered exclusively through T-Mobile. GoMo News received an interesting note from industry watcher, IDC, on this subject. It found that HTC and Samsung Windows Phones were significantly affected by the introduction of the Lumia series, which suggests a clear dominance for Nokia in the Windows Phones space over the next few quarters. Continue reading

IHS predicts that Nokia will get 50% of W7 Mango sales

Rating: Windows Phone to overtake iOS by 0.1 % in 2015

Most analysts firmly believe that the key to success in the smartphone sector is the North American marketplace. The latest researcher to draw this conclusion is IHS iSuppli see here. Wayne Lam, a senior analyst for wireless communications with IHS, “This hot product [Lumia 900] represents Nokia’s first step to reclaim its market share. Combined with Nokia’s efforts to drive the development of the Windows Phone ecosystem, the Lumia 900 and its successors will help Microsoft to reclaim its No. 2 ranking in smartphone operating system market share in 2015.” Actually, IHS predictions give Windows Phone one tenth of a point lead over iOS by 2015. More significant are IHS’s predictions for Nokia’s Windows Phone market share. Continue reading

UK Nokia boss says W7 Mango will triumph

Rating: Apparently there’s such a thing as iFatigue

UK and Ireland general manager with Nokia, Conor Pierce, appears to have coined the term ‘iFatigue’ to describe British retailers attitude towards the very latest iOS devices from Apple. He was speaking to The Sun here, which just so happens to be the UK’s best selling printed daily newspaper. Nice scoop, Conor. Apparently, Pierce reckons that W7 Mango (Windows Phone) is the company’s secret weapon which will enable the Finnish mobile handset producer to claw its way back in the UK smartphone sales charts Continue reading
