Here at GoMo News we love fundraising! So we are quite excited about the fact that Givey, a new fundraising tool allowing users to make gift-aided denotations to charity on Twitter or other social media – has launched.
A new force really has emerged when it comes to disaster relief. A recurring motif over the last year and a half has been the use of mobiles to gather much-needed funds when disaster strikes – and the on-going crisis in Japan has been no different. Today, two stories have emerged about using mobile to gather disaster relief for Japan, in the aftermath of the earthquake. Continue reading

The use of mobile phones as a way to donate to charity is pretty much now a proven business model. First attracting major public attention during the Haiti Disaster earlier this year, more and more “mobile giving” options have launched. Today, we see another launch in the UK – from SMS marketer Txtlocal. They claim their major differentiator is that the charity gets the entire amount donated through the SMS; there is no slice taken by Txtlocal or certain mobile operators.
Earlier this year, after disaster struck Haiti, something interesting happened in the mobile industry. For the first time, mass attention was brought to the idea that mobile phones could be used to send money to charities. Canadian company Mobio claims that using mobile barcodes to donate to charity has a lot of advantages over using SMS, and has just launching a major QR Code campaign across Vancouver with Union Gospel Mission. Here’s an interesting one – GoMo News published a piece yesterday on how 2d barcodes are getting into the mobile charity space. Mobile giving has become much more high-profile this year, since it was so useful in Haiti. Since we published the story yesterday, we’ve been in contact with Canadian barcode provider Mobio – which feels there’s a lot to be said for using barcodes instead of SMS when it comes to giving. At a mobile money conference in Los Angeles last November, I had the chance to talk to Jim Manis, CEO of Mobile Giving. He spoke about how charities tend to view mobile as a once off “strategy” for donation, rather than as a channel through which long-term donors can be acquired (see the full interview here). But the success of mobile as a channel for sending to the victims of the Haitian earthquake could be the turning point that changes peoples minds. Mobile really can be used to help people all over the world, every single day. Continue reading
