Prepare for mobile barcodes on your direct mail marketing

Posted by Cian on Feb 22, 2010 13:19

barcodeglobeI don’t know about you, but the majority of physical, paper mail that I get nowadays is marketing mail. As a result of a press release I got this morning from a company called MindFireInc, I’ve been doing some reading into how Hewlett Packard supports direct mail marketeers - and how MindFireInc will be integrating mobile barcodes onto the campaigns.

Mobile advertising is accelerating says Out There Media

Posted by Cian on Feb 18, 2010 19:56

picture-5The last time I spoke to mobile advertiser Out There Media, it was planning a Singapore office and a moderate European expansion - among other things. Things have rather picked up speed since then. I managed to grab 15 minutes of CEO Kerstin Trikalitis’ time at Mobile World Congress, for a quick fire update on the snowball effect that has been taking place in operator advertising.

Engineers as marketers: a mobile marketing strategy that seems to be working pretty good for InMobi

Posted by Cian on Feb 18, 2010 14:10

inmobi InMobi belongs to a category of mobile advertisers you might term “the Outsiders”. It’s a big company, with big reach - but it doesn’t have a huge presence in the US or Europe…. yet. GoMo News has reported on InMobi a lot in the past, and I leapt on the chance to talk to them at MWC. I spoke to InMobi Founder & CEO Naveen Tewari and VP of Global Marketing, James Lamberti. We had a great interview about the InMobi business model and expansion strategy - I had not realised how strongly technology driven InMobi is. We also discussed the fascinating concept of “engineers as marketers” and talked about some idiosyncracies in the Japanese market.

MWC: when is an application an advertisment? When it’s Canvas, the facebook app from mobile IM master Colibria

Posted by Cian on Feb 16, 2010 14:56

When Colibiria announced the Canvas application for Facebook in early Febraury, GoMo News reported on it. But I have to admit that I didn’t get it what it’s really about. It’s a Facebook application that allows you to access your mobile contacts list from the social network itself. You can send them SMS or IM them, and use VoIP to call them (see the full report here). At the time I pondered about how much money its possible for an operator to recoup by sneaking their core functions into an on-line social network… but that’s not really what this service is for. This service is really a massive advertisement for Colibrias Rich Communications Suite (RCS).

More Blyk news - the mobile advertiser holds on to powerful analytics from Aito

Posted by Cian on Feb 11, 2010 14:02

blykNews from Blyk is like waiting for buses - nothing for ages, then it all comes along at once. After Blyk announced it was being bought into Orange last year, we didn’t hear anything for months. Then in January, Orange announced a new service based on the Blyk offering. This must have gone pretty well, because mobile analytics service Aito has announced it will be continuing to work with Blyk.

Mobile advertiser InMobi expands into Thailand with exclusive deal

Posted by Cian on Feb 9, 2010 13:22

inmobiOne of the biggest mobile ad networks in the world, InMobi has been showing a talent for getting exclusive contracts. Originating in South Africa, the network has made massive strides in non-First World countries - and for the past few months it has been winning big contracts in America and Australia. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to stop it’s other global efforts, as todays exclusive with Thailands largest mobile social network shows.

Earning free mobile minutes through marketing rears its head again - how will Embee do?

Posted by Cian on Feb 8, 2010 18:03

iphone-embee-free-lunch-mobile Blyk Mobile has featured heavily on GoMo News in the past. The ad-supported mobile operator had a bold plan to give users free mobile voice minutes and texts in return for receiving mobile advertising. It has been a rocky road for Blyk (see our recent report on the fortunes of the company) - and today we’ve been introduced to a company that is trying something very similar in the States. Embee Mobile is connecting brands, operators and mobile users in a way that allows phone owners to get minutes for free by participating in marketing… all through a Facebook application.

JAGTAG claims 87% of all US phone owners can use mobile barcodes right now

Posted by Cian on Feb 2, 2010 19:34

jagtag-mobile-barcode 2d barcodes are one of those technologies that seem perfectly suited to working on mobile phones. The technology can offer a lot to the modern consumer - by the simple step of taking a picture of a barcode, it allows you to gain access to a vast amount of information, special offers and more. Outside of Japan, take up of barcodes has been fairly reserved. However, Seattle-based company JAGTAG claims that right now, almost 90% of all phone owners in the States can use mobile barcodes.
