Truphone is busy this year: mobile VoIP operator expands its Nokia mobile footprint

Posted by Cian on Feb 25, 2010 12:39

mobile-phone-nfc-wireless Truphone has been one busy company this year. It’s a pure-play mobile VoIP service - meaning that it focuses its entire business on allowing people to make incredibly cheap voice calls over the internet, using their mobile phone. So far this year it has launched an Android version of the service, and announced its intentions to create its own VoIP based MVN over Vodafone in the UK. And today it has announced an expansion in its range of Nokia phones.

One year of Business Confidence Indexes from the Mobile Entertainment Forum - the South is the place to be!

Posted by Cian on Feb 24, 2010 14:45

mef-bciThe Business Confidence Index is a bold experiment that the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) began at Mobile World Congress last year. The BCI is compiled from a survey that is sent out every quarter, anonymously answered by Executives at the top levels of member companies of the MEF. And so at MWC this year, I sat down for a juice and miniature doughnut with Rimma Perelmuter, Executive Director of the MEF, to talk about what the BCI has revealed over the last year.

The open application store industry is where iPhone will see competition. PocketGear has bought out Handango

Posted by Cian on Feb 23, 2010 14:36

bigstockphoto_fire_ants_170281 Mobile applications are often the subject of some seriously ostentatious advertising and promotion. Apple regularly quotes its most recent “billion” landmark, and the Wholesale Application Community announcement at MWC last week was the very definition of grandstanding. But in the older market of platform agnostic app stores, things are quickly getting very interesting. Todays announcement that PocketGear has bought out competitor Handango is only the most recent of several interesting developments.

I was there from Sunday evening straight through to Friday, and this might give you a flavour of what a week at the biggest mobile event in the world is like!

Prepare for mobile barcodes on your direct mail marketing

barcodeglobeI don’t know about you, but the majority of physical, paper mail that I get nowadays is marketing mail. As a result of a press release I got this morning from a company called MindFireInc, I’ve been doing some reading into how Hewlett Packard supports direct mail marketeers - and how MindFireInc will be integrating mobile barcodes onto the campaigns.

Is T-Mobile and Orange about to get the go ahead in UK? If so, say hello to your new biggest operator

Posted by Cian on Feb 22, 2010 12:39

The proposed merger between T-Mobile and Orange in the UK has caused a whole bucket full of regulatory winces. At the start of this month, GoMo News reported how the UK Office of Fair Trading, which was investigating the merger, passed it up to the European Commission to see if the entire process could be sped up. Now both operators are claiming that the EC is on the verge of approving the merger. In which case you could see a new joint-venture between the French and German operators go ahead in the next few months.

Want to IM your friends while playing mobile games? Colibria might have the answer…

nexus-one-xzibit-im-colibria“We’re not really interested in being fancy on the front end. We’re just creating a solid Android IM client”. So says Guy Reiffer, VP of Marketing for Colibria. He was taking me through the details of some of the work Colibria has done recently - including the “Canvas” application for facebook (see our article from earlier this week) and an IM client for Android that can be integrated into anything that runs on an Android device.
