Pyramid predicts in UK 84% will be smartphones by 2017
Rating: Also 22.2 million 4G users in 2012. Shurley shome mishtake?
Just over half (59 percent) of all handsets sold in the UK 2012 will be smartphones, according to the latest figures from Pyramid Research. Significantly, that number will rise and smartphones will represent 84 percent of all handsets in 2017. Given the growing percentage of the British population being ‘elderly’ and since they are the chief smartphone Refuseniks, that figure makes sense. The Press release also says that the number of 4G subscribers in the UK expected to reach 22.2 million in 2012. That’s obviously a mistake – the company must mean by 2017. GoMobile News wonders how many publications will blithely report that number. Continue reading
EE’s Swantee confirms personal intervention over iPhone 5
Rating: And the others had 1800 MHz spectrum too
So. To Battersea Power Station (in the UK’s capital) last night [November 1st 2012] to celebrate the official launch of EE‘s (formerly Everything Everywhere’s) 4G LTE network – 4GEE. Whilst the crowd was watching a pretty amazing 4D projection on the side of the old power station, GoMobile News found ourselves standing right next to Olaf Swantee, EE’s CEO. Not one to miss a chance, we swiftly asked Mr Swantee if he really had personally intervened in the development of the iPhone 5 to ensure it was compatible with the UK’s first 4G network which runs at 1800 MHz (Band 3). And, yes, he confirmed that he’d been to see “Tim” – as in Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. Swantee also confirmed another thing which GoMobile News had always suspected – that Vodafone and O2 have spare 1800 MHz spectrum which they could in theory use for 4G. Continue reading
UK mobile operators in plan to share networks during outages
Stop the fighting and start cooperating, suggests EE’s Olaf Swantee
Talks are in the pipeline between Britain’s four mobile operators which could see them share each others’ networks during blackouts, EE’s boss Olaf Swantee has revealed. EE, which owns Orange and T-Mobile and whose new 4G network launches tomorrow [30th October 2012], is Britain’s biggest network provider with 27 million customers and has most to lose in the event of an outage. Earlier this month rival operator O2 faced a storm of criticism when its network went down for the second time in six months, hitting 2.2 million customers. Other network providers such as Vodafone have suffered similar problems in the past, with matters not helped by the growth of smartphones and the corresponding rise of network-hungry apps. EE chief’s uphill task to persuade phone makers over Britain’s 4G
Network goes live next week – but only just
Smartphone users benefiting from EE‘s new 4G network in Britain will have the personal intervention of the firm’s CEO to thank, it’s been revealed. With just a week to go before EE’s super-fast network is officially launched, City AM reports how Olaf Swantee – boss of EE and its subsidiary brands Orange and T-Mobile – spent months persuading phone manufacturers to design devices that would run on the operator’s 1800 MHz frequency. The network will also be the only 4G network to work with Apple’s best-selling iPhone 5. Continue reading
EE says its 4G network will start on October 30th
Rating: New brand for 4G still to be revealed
EE‘ s CEO, Olaf Swantee, has just announced the date when his company’s 4G network will start commercial operations. It’s October 30th – not 23rd March [2012] as previously reported. Swantee describes it as the UK’s first superfast mobile 4G and fibre broadband service. That’s because as GoMobile News was surprised to discover, UK Broadband has been offering a 4G service* since February 2012. According to Mark Newman, chief research officer with Informa Telecoms & Media, EE (formerly Everything Everywhere) is going to launch a major national advertising campaign in the coming weeks. “The combination of an attractive new brand, faster speeds and the iPhone 5 (which will operate on the 4G network) is going to be a pretty compelling proposition,” Newman commented. EE accidentally confirms that iPhone 5 is LTE
Rating: Shows obviously Apple 4G handset
As EE (the new name for Everything Everywhere) was proudly announcing that it has switched on its LTE 1800 MHz based 4G network, it accidentally showed an Apple handset as a compatible device. Other manufacturers who were named directly were Huawei, HTC, Nokia and Samsung. It’s a bit of a boost for WP8 fans that Nokia will be amongst the first 4G handset suppliers in the UK, too. Olaf Swantee revealed that his newly rebranded network has switch on its 4G service in four UK cities: – Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, and London, naturally. Which was why Major of London, Boris Johnson, was the guest speaker. Continue reading
Swantee calls for 4G in UK right now
Rating: Is it a level playing field though?
Olaf Swantee, CEO with Everything Everywhere (the combination of T-Mobile UK and France Telecom’s Orange UK) made a very impassioned plea to the powers-that-be in the UK to let his network start offering 4G services over its existing spectrum allocation. This was at the launch of the DigiWorld 2012 Yearbook in London. He made a very forceful argument that the status quo leaves the UK trailing miles behind other developed economies. It is so easy to feel sympathetic with Mr Swantee when the UK has traditionally led the world in the telecommunications high tech stakes. However, there’s the minor issue of level playing fields. IDATE launches latest DigitalWorld Yearbook
Rating: It’s an industry Bible and Goldmine of useful stats rolled into one
GoMobile News had the pleasure of attending the launch of the DigiWorld Yearbook 2012 in London. This publication is now in its 12th year and has rapidly established itself as something of a Bible for the mobile industry – although in effect its remit covers the entire digital economy. What we took away from this launch was the publication’s conclusion that there are three big game changers at work within the cellular industry: – mobile everywhere; content in the cloud; and big data. The launch was accompanies by a keynote speech from Olaf Swantee, CEO, Everything Everywhere. He used the opportunity to make an impassioned plea for his company to be able to roll out 4G in the 1800 MHz spectrum. Continue reading
More dissent amongst the former T-Mobile UK retail arm ranks
Rating: We’re all doomed, I say
Another T-Mobile UK Retail insider has contacted GoMo News with details of the apparently unhappy state of the company’s workforce following its merger into the newly created Everything Everywhere (EE). This mole issues the dark warning that, “If the new CEO doesn’t wake up and pay attention, then this company could be doomed.” We guess this must be a reference to Olaf Swantee (ex-France Telecom/Orange), who replaced Tom Alexander last month. Our source alleges bias towards the old Orange half of the company – hardly surprising since the last two CEOs have come from the Orange side. He or she says, “It feels like EE is paying more attention to the Orange side of the company.” Continue reading
OMS 2010 – Customer care is revenue says Orange

Rating: Caring for customer isn’t just about keeping ‘em happy
Speaking at OMS 2010 in London, Orange vp , Olaf Swantee, outlined how Orange sees that customer care isn’t just about reducing customer ‘churn’, it’s also a revenue generator. Even iPhone users need help. Apparently. Continue reading
