Report predicts demise of OS-centric app storefronts
Rating: Bring on D2C and HTML5
Market Analyst, Juniper Research has just released a new report that predicts the demise of OS-centric app storefronts in favour of HTML5 and direct-to-consumer (D2C) models. “The closer integration between web-based apps and handsets should mean that the advantage that native apps have is reduced,” the report claims. That will favour HTML5 which is a mark-up language that reduces end-user dependence on plug-in app technologies. Smartphones users will utilise their handset’s browser to access platform independent apps. This report also highlights the growing importance of operator and in-app billing and predicts tablets’ share of the apps market will rise considerably. Continue reading
3 UK gets into bed with the Nokia Ovi store
Rating: You need a Symbian ^3 phone, like the X7, to benefit though
Now that Vodafone has partnered with Google’s Android Market (see our previous story here), it seems that 3UK has followed suit. But not with Google – it’s gone with Nokia and the Ovi apps store. However, it seems that only those with the very latest Symbian ^3 handsets such as the Nokia C7, Nokia E7 and Nokia N8 will be able to access the special ‘Three Likes’ page. Plus the Nokia X7, of course, because that particular handset is available now exclusively in the UK through 3. The handset features a built-in app that integrates fully with a new version of the Ovi Store that appeared this week [July 2011]. The move shows that Nokia’s Ovi store is far from dead as its rivals like to paint it. Continue reading
Orange wants young Nokia owners to volunteer
Rating: But only if they have a fancy new phone
UK mobile operator, Orange, has decided to buck the trend and actually launch a version of its mobile volunteering app – Do Some Good – for Nokia handsets. The app has been available on the iPhone since March 2011 and a Blackberry version followed that. The only snag is that – instead of targeting the vast pool of youngsters that still own a Nokia handset, this app appears to run only on the latest generation of smartphones. Orange has place the Do Some Good onto the Nokia Ovi Store and it’s not clear exactly which handsets are compatible. However, the app couldn’t be described as small. It is 1.42 Mb and there’s a warning it could download a 13 Mb update. Adding to the impression that this app is aimed at kids with posh parents who give them the latest phones, the Android version isn’t out yet. Continue reading
Festivals apps are all the rave
Rating: What you really need is a tent finder
Everywhere you look, there seem to be apps appearing to coincide with all the major music festivals in the UK. A really obvious candidate is an iPhone app for the iTunes festival (which takes place from July 1st 2011 ). Naturally, that app is being heavily promoted on the iTunes App Store. Of course, Glastonbury had its fair share of apps, too. Orange launched the official Glastonbury 2011 app for iPhone and Android users, and even had a version for Nokia handsets (on Ovi) out before the festival started. There’s one big snag to all these festival apps – battery life. Music festivals usually last at least four days and most smartphones struggle to reach 24 hours. That’s probably why Orange decided to test the Sound Charge T-Shirt at Glastonbury. Continue reading
Symbian still getting some love: Nimbuzz releases update
I’ve got something of a track record for being scathing about Symbian – it’s in the incredibly unfortunate position of being dead in the water, while at the same time still being the most populous mobile OS in the world. Which means developers are still forced to release updates for it, despite the fact that it’s starting to stink like a body under the floorboards. Today, vastly popular mobile IM and call service Nimbuzz has announced version 3.2 of its Symbian app. Continue reading
Shooting Ovi in the back of the head will take Nokia over 7 months
Just over a month ago, Nokia released a statement saying that downloads from Ovi were healthier than ever. It stated that the service was driving “up to” 5 million downloads every day. It sounded hollow even then. And it sounds even more so today as Nokia reveals that it’s finally dropping the Ovi thing altogether. But it will take at least 7 months to make that name change. Continue reading

Rating: Anytime, anywhere group video for free
Sticking two fingers up to those peddling expensive video conferencing hardware, video software specialist, fring claims to have launched the world’s first group video call service for both iPhone and Android handsets. It’s available immediately for from the Apple iTunes App Store and the Android Market (just search for Fring). Maping expert provides stealth advertising
Rating: An audience with Motti Kushnir – Telmap’s CMO
It’s been easy to view a specialist like Telmap as just another map supplier. However, a quick chat with Motti Kushnir, Telmap’s CMO, has convinced GoMo News that the company has been able to re-invent itself. As Kushnir says, “Maps are not just about navigation”. There’s more to it than that and significantly, Kushnir explained that Telmap has effectively mutated into a supplier of mobile ads without ever having to mention the word ‘advertising’. During our chat, Kushnir also let it slip that Vodafone 360 has effectively been dead for a year – it’s passed away quietly without any major fuss. Continue reading
Nokia ships first Symbian Anna devices
Rating: Existing Symbian ^3 users await update date
Keeping its promise to carry on releasing smartphones based on the Symbian OS, Nokia has just announced tow new devices: – the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7. These are the very first Nokia smartphones to contain the latest, updated Symbian software nick-named Symbian Anna. This release will eventually be available for Nokia N8s; E7s; C7s and C6-01 phones. The company just didn’t say when. You have to question why Nokia announced the move to WP7 with so many Symbian phones still in the pipeline? Continue reading
Nokia’s Ovi stats impress
Rating; Yes but are 158 developers now millionaires?
On March 12th 2001 (today), Nokia has released some very impressive stats for its Ovi Store. It claims the store has grown by nearly eight times compared to the same time last year [2010]. Nokia’s app store now achieves 5 million downloads per day. 15 per cent of those daily downloads go to Symbian ^3 devices. To put that into perspective, Apple is clocking up around 30 million downloads per day according to Uberpshones here. Continue reading
A cutting insight into Windows Marketplace
Rating: It’s not all bad says IDC’s Delaney
A research note put out by IDC director, John Delaney, shows that everything isn’t quite as dire for Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Marketplace as things might initially appear. For starters, Windows Phone users appear to be very heavy consumers of apps. He also points out that when you compare the number of apps Windows Phone has after five months, to how many the iPhone had after five months, Microsoft isn’t lagging that far behind. Continue reading
