Guest Post: Apple’s iTunes turns 10 years old
by John Oswald, business design lead, with Fjord
Apple reached a milestone on Sunday [April 28th 2013] with its iTunes online service turning ten years old. Today it is so easy to forget how ‘revolutionary’ this fore-runner of the modern app store actually was. iTunes legitimised digital music in an era where MP3s were synonymous with piracy. Spotify hooks up with Virgin Media
Rating: Will it increase subscribers as result?
How bizarre. Despite being a customer of both Virgin Media and Spotify, this GoMo News hack only learnt today [July 6th 2011] that there are very definite plans for a link-up between the two. According to a report in the UK’s FT here, Spotify and Virgin Media have struck a deal that should help the music streaming service boost its numbers. Virgin Media has an estimated 4 million customers in the UK. If the deal goes through then customers will be offered access Spotify’s catalogue of 13 million songs through their TV set-top box. Customers should also be able to get Spotify services on their netbook or mobile phone. Continue reading
HuffPost UK advertises for bloggers
Rating: Comes with choice of 3 mobile apps
The Huffington Post UK officially launches today [July 6th 2011] and one of its first acts has been to advertise for bloggers. GoMo News spotted an advert for the news site on the back page of a free newspaper – the Stylist – in London, yesterday. Next to the headline, ‘Blog all about it’, the advert explained, “We’re looking for your contribution. Make your opinion count.” Don’t hurry, though, because the option to ‘Send us a blog-pitch’ is bugged. At least it does say the software is still in beta. Never mind because the news site does at least have almost a full compliment of mobile apps (where’s the Ovi one?). It’s hard to tell whether they point at the UK or US site at present. Mobile music: Spotify announces 1 million simultaneous subscribers
For an app that was once trapped by Apple in “development hell“, Spotify has done bloody well for itself. It took an FCC investigation to get the music streaming app green lit by Apple – and now it has announced it’s one millionth subscriber. And the company has confirmed that it doesn’t mean “one million subscriptions sold since launch” – that would be a misleading number that counts people who have since cancelled their service. No, no, Spotify means that it has over 1,000,000 paying subscribers on the service right now. Continue reading

Sony’s Qriocity music may run on Android
Rating: Foolishly adopts a monthly subscription model
Sony appears to have launched its new ‘cloud based’ music service, Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity, initially only in the UK and Ireland. The service, which is powered by Omnifone, offers six million songs at launch from four big labels: -Universal, Sony Music, Warner and EMI. There are actually five big labels and by comparison Apple’s iTunes has 14 million tracks. Initial reports say that the service will run on Android devices such as smartphones. However, there’s no mention of such things currently on the official Qriocity site here. So this must be down to speculation that it will run on the fabled Sony Ericsson Z1 PSP phone.
