Telnic pushes new .tel mobile domains for sports clubs

Telnic Limited is the registry operator for a new top level mobile domain. The .tel domains are being purchased by, amongst others, football clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs. US sporting bodies applying for a .tel include Major League Baseball clubs New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers.

As the initial phase of purchases for .tel draws to a close at the start of next month, Telnic Limited is pushing hard for other sports clubs to apply for a domain.

From the release:

“With the flexibility and ease of management that a .tel domain brings, sporting clubs of all types can get closer to their fans regardless of the devices they favour,” explains Justin Hayward, Communications Director at Telnic.  “Manchester United alone has well in excess of 50 million fans in India and Korea.  Many of these use their mobile devices every day to play games, chat, and keep up with their club’s news, avoiding traditional PC access.  A .tel is a powerful, affordable and branded delivery mechanism, whether providing a simple way to get hold of match tickets via click to connect functionality or generating new revenue through premium rate telephone number-based competitions.”

What we think?

Oooh, some competition for .mobi? Telnic is in what it calls its “Sunrise” period, where only big trademark owners can register a domain. It’ll be another couple of weeks before the sites are made available to the general public. This could see the .tel domain launch with a strong line-up of great looking sites, but do we really need another mobile domain?
