LONDON 11th January 2010 – Despite our love affair with the latest hi-tech gadgets, Tesco reports that its cheap and cheerful tiny ‘party phone’, the £18.99 VX1i Party Phone, is one of its best selling handsets.
Selling over 10,000 units in the two weeks leading up to the New Year, it continues to be one of the retailers’ best selling gadgets.
The exclusive handset is a SIM free phone designed to allow users to drop in their own SIM card regardless of network, meaning they can keep their own number to make and take calls from friends.
Lance Batchelor, Chief Executive Officer for Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile commented:
“Our handset was developed as an affordable replacement, temporary phone or alternative to a more expensive phone, but its popularity really has taken us by surprise.
“The start of a new year is the perfect time to cut costs and we are amazed to see how many shoppers want a plucky little alternative to the smart-phone pack – or they want both!”
The affordable phone is designed to be perfect for forgetful party-goers all year round.
Tesco Telecoms research found that 8 out of 10 of women find it annoying to carry a handbag on a night out.
As skinny jeans become increasingly fashionable, 69% of Brits find it uncomfortable to have a large mobile phone in their pocket.
In response to this, Tesco Telecoms took the decision to launch the ultra slim VX1i Party Phone, perfect for women who want to ditch their handbags and enjoy a night out with a mobile that slips into even the skinniest pair of jeans.
The VX1i Party Phone is unlocked to work with any SIM card (excluding 3) and is available to buy in selected Tesco stores.
