Vangard voice cross enterprise mobile applications -can you add voice to a mobile barcode?

by: Bena Roberts Monday, October 27th, 2008

Vangard Voice Systems, Inc. (Vangard), the innovator of AccuSpeech(R) Mobile voice technology, announced the availability of its new Mobile Voice Platform (MVP).

MVP?
It is an environment for web or mobile applications.

Huh?
I might need a briefing –but to me it sounds like it can empower voice applications anywhere. So it is enabling voice as an interface in any environment.

So it adds voice as an option (multi-modal) adding value to applications not replacing existing services.
From the press release

“Like the global adoption of RFID and barcode scanning technologies, voice-powered cross-enterprise mobile applications represent the next quantum leap for business and government operations,” said Bob Bova, president and chief executive officer of Vangard Voice Systems. “The availability of Vangard’s Mobile Voice Platform and its Rapid Development Environment will speed the adoption of hands-free, eyes-free voice capabilities, driving the next generation of tactical, operational and strategic advantage.”

What we think?
Can you voice power a barcode? That my be a question for NeoMedia –but it does certainly make for interesting thinking. If you could add voice to any mobile application would you?
I mean on the Playstation sometimes I shout at it –but would I want it to shout back at me? I see the use in a car for an interactive mobile environment but I do think that multi-modal is good –but the use case needs to be stellar for this to be a necessity.

Rick Szatkowski Said:

NEOM was deoming voice-driven UPC barcode linking in 2000-2001 using the Qode Commerce System. It is possible to use voice-to-text conversion to allow a consumer to speak the bar code number and NeoMedia’s infrastructure allows switching out to the content. Since it was a voice-initiated query vs. a browser or camera-initiated query, NEOM’s system could return a voice response over the phone.

“Automatic identification in 2001 is not just bar codes,” said Rob Durst, executive vice president and chief technology officer of NeoMedia. “Today,” he said, “Auto ID also includes voice, radio frequency identification (RFID) and other innovative technologies now being developed that link physical objects directly to the Internet without having to slow down and use a search engine.”
